After surgery you may be referred for hand therapy. Hand therapy serves to enhance the outcome from surgery and ensure that post-surgical complications are minimised.
In conjunction with your doctor’s instructions, your therapist may:
Explain your injury/surgery in detail
Remove/minimise your surgical bandages to allow exercises to start
Redress the wound
Remove your sutures
Apply a splint
Prescribe exercises to minimise post operative stiffness
Implement techniques to minimise scar production
Not everyone needs surgery, so your Specialist or GP may refer you to a hand therapist for splinting, casting or bracing, exercises and strengthening or oedema management.
